We hear this a LOT around here. People get tired of, or can no longer keep the Ig and then Dump it.
Things you should know: What It sounds like you have is a baby. IF! and only IF! You care for him/her (I'll refer to it as a him from now on) correctly, He will live 15-20 years and get Around 6 feet (if not more) long. Males go through a breeding season in which the can get VERY aggressive and do damage to their keepers. With Females, you have to worry about egg binding. In which case surgury is needed to remove the eggs. You Can NOT tell the age until (I believe) 1 - 1 1/2 years of age. When He is full grown His cage must be a MINIMUM of 6 ft tall, 6ft long, and 3 feet deep. THOSE ARE MINIMUMS! Bigger is always better. They are tree climbers to Make any cage tall and long. TEN GALLON TANKS ARE NOT A GOOD CAGE! No fish tank will do for an iguana. As far as diet goes, THEY ARE PLANT EATTERS! NO MEAT OR ANIMAL PROTIEN SHOULD BE OFFERED EVER! I stress that because many think it's ok to feed the Igs cat or dog food. Animal Protien is lethal to Igs. It causes liver and kidney faliure. In short, it kills the Ig slowly and painfully. The diet should be 60% greens, 30-35% Veggies, and 5-10% fruit. Greens should be Collards, Mustard, Turnip, Escrole, Endive, Watercress, etc. NO LETTUCE OF ANY KIND! It's like burger king, No Nutrition at all. Even romaine. Veggies can be pretty much any squash, bell pepers, snow peas, green beans, etc. And Fruit should be Strawberries, Blueberries, blackberries, mango, papya (sp?), etc. Carrots, bananas, and Spinach Shouldn't be offered often if at all. These guys NEED! UVB flouesant lights. I use the brand Reptisun 5.0 for My guy. A few others here use different ones. There should be a basking spot of about 100 degrees and the ambiant temp should be around 80-85 degrees. Do not use any kind of sand or bark as a flooring because they can eat it and it can damage they're insides. I use tile flooring but others use Newspaper and the like. DO NOT USE HEAT ROCKS!!! They will cause burns to your Igs belly. You should get a couple books and read up on these guys. One is "Iguanas for Dummies" And the author of that Book is one of the people who run this fourm. Also Look for "The Complete Owners Manual to Green Iguanas" (I think that's the name) Someone else can give you the author's name. You can also check out this website :

There is a LOT of GREAT info there. People who Have Iguanas don't call themselves Iguana owners, They call themselves Iguana Slaves. You have no forfited any outside life you once knew. LOL :) Just kidding. But they are a LOT of Responsibility and aren't the easiest (or cheapest) animal to have. I hope you are willing to give this guy a Long happy healthy life and home. And if you can't contact a local rescue and turn him over. Please don't just dump him off some where (we get a lot of that here too..... ). Good luck and if you need any help, we're here! :)

PS: Welcome to the Iguana Fourm From Me and Smirnoff Ig (My guy)! :) Here's a pic of His new Habitat.

:I really need some help. I inherited an iguana (named Kaiser Wilhelm III :) ) from a girl who had abandoned it at my best friend's house. I don't know very much about them, but he's (if it is even a boy) a little over a foot long from head to tail (his body is only about 6 inches... the rest is his tail. If you have any advice for me I'd really appreciate it.
