Joey and I went to the vet today and the vet believes that he has a contact thermal burn.
As I said before, Joey has no contact with any of his lights and he most definitely doesn't have a heat rock (thanks to what I learned on this forum prior to bringing Joey home). So this has me concerned.
Like I said previously, he was staying at the pet store for 4 days while we were between places moving and rebuilding his enclosure; I know they do sell hot rocks there but I specifically asked that one not be used where he was kept. The heat lamp they had for him was outside the enclosure. Also, when I picked him up from the pet store he did not have any marks that I noticed on his tummy then.
I questioned the vet about this and he said that burns can take up to 14 days to develop and show. Does this sound reasonable? I would think that you would see a thermal burn immediately.
The vet also says that there is nothing you can topically put on it because iguana skin is so tough that it won't help. He informed me that the spot will get darker and then the skin will slough off and then Joey should go on oral antibiotics to prevent infection and also we should put diluted betadine on the area. The vet says it doesn't appear to be a very deep burn but that the area could still take months to heal. He also said that when the skin sloughs off it will look pretty raw and that is why antibiotics and betadine will be so important to prevent infection.
Anyways, we have another appointment in 2 weeks to get him rechecked at that stage.
Hopefully he will heal quickly.
Thanks everyone for all your help and concern.
