Thanks for responding Xta (as always)...*grins*
I visited Joey at the petstore while he was there and he didn't have a hot rock; however they did have his heat lamp clamped to the wire side of the cage they had him in when I went to pick him up. He had a basking log but he must have climbed up the mesh and gotten to the bulb and not felt it getting too hot on his tummy. I feel so bad.
At home all his lights are above his cage and out of his reach, I didn't even think about all the possibilities of improperly placed lights at the pet store because the owner takes in unwanted iguanas as well, and has taken iguanas from another pet store in town that had thermal burns on them that she had to treat (from hot rocks).
That's why I don't know why she wouldn't know about such dangers.
I know she sells hot rocks as well, but she tells people not to get them for iguanas; is there a reptile that heat rocks are okay for? Why would she even sell them.
I'm going to put Aloe Vera on Joey's burn spot, I'm hoping that will help some, even though iguana scales are so thick.
It is scary to think how in just 4 days so much can happen to your iguana. I should have checked beforehand to make sure she had the proper set up rather than just trusting that she had.
I won't make that mistake ever again - lesson learned.
There doesn't appear to be any scab yet, and it would have been around Dec.23rd that it happened. How long will it take to become a scab?
Does anyone know anything else that might help to heal the area before the skin sloughs off?
I just wanted to tell you Xta, that you especially, as well as others, are very diligent in answering and commenting on people's questions and concerns in this forum. It is really comforting to know that help and support is only a few clicks of a keyboard away. You should be very proud of yourself for your contribution to this forum. We all appreciate it, and I'm sure Sleestack will be fine...*smiles*.
Kally & Joey

:oooo I'm sorry to hear this. I was hoping it wasn't a burn, but then maybe that is better than something harder to diagnose and treat. Everything the vet said sounds reasonable to me. I just hope it doesn't get really bad. My last iguana rescue had a very bad burn on his belly when I got him....from a hotrock. When I got him it was at the ending stages when it scabbed up really badly. By then it had healed for the most part...just waited for the scab to fall off. I smeared antibiotic on it just to be on the safe side, but he healed on his own. Here is a photo of him when he was young after the scab fell off--see the scars (his scales were melted together). It was on his chest and all over his belly.

:I recently thought Slee may have burns from his overhead light...parts of his skin turned lighter, but I changed his lighting around to correct this and so far nothing has developed. Since your vet mentioned 14 days to show up...I will be keeping an eye out myself for burns.

:If Joey does have a burn, that it must have been the petstore right? They must have used a heatrock then, unless he was in a wirecage and leaned against hot cage material after it was heated by lights.
