I wouldn't doubt that they could make that association at all... Whether or not it happens is a different story. If you can teach them that being handled isn't a threatening issue at all that would be the best thing. If it happens that you need gloves for somethign like claw trimming then by all means go ahead. In the long run though, if you can handle an ig without any protection you're ahead of the game.
Just as a testament to their intelligence, I know of one particular ig that not only uses the toilet to go to the bathroom but also flushes when he's finished.....
