Tempest's ability to spot movement and body language amaze me, and like the post below mine his ability to read body language and notice eye contact is remarkable. But, I was wondering how smart are iguana's really? Here's the thing.
When feeding Tempest, I don't bother with any kind of arm protection. I just put his food/water in, or take bowls out, and as long as I don't make eye contact he's usually good. If he's not good, we go into the stare down thing till he looks down, I tell him he's good, and stop looking at him. This so far has worked well. If I go to pick him up or handle him, I always put on some arm protection, usually thick wool socks with finger and thumb holes.
What I'm wondering, is will he learn to make the association of me wearing padding or not with being picked up or not. I don't want him to learn that padding means catching, and lack of padding means no I'm not going to catch you. My dogs would make this association very quickly, as would my cat, but will an iguana?
