In Reply to: What is the lifespan of a green iguana? (more) posted by dingoblue on October 16, 2002 at 19:27:39:
The average lifespan of a green iguana properly cared for and housed from hatchling to adult can range from 25-30 years. From people I have spoken too and the poll i did one year the average captive life in my area was 1-2 years TOPS. If an iguana has been feed animal proteins, I have noticed that average lifespans range in the 8-12 year range.
SO basically depending on what kind of care was received BEFORE you, ya could have an old coot or middle age and crazy!

:I rescued a male green iguana 11 years ago while in college, and we've had good and bad times together. He's bitten me bad enough for stitches, been to the vet several times for infections due to breeding season complications, but I'd never get rid of him!
:He has not gone into breeding season color/behavior the last several years. His appetite is massive, and he defecates in the tub at least several times a week. He's essentially healthy as ever.
:All this being said, I feel that I'm working with a geriatric individual now, and was wondering if anyone could recommend any necessary changes in care as this animal enters his golden years. Also, what is the lifespan of this species?
:Thanks
