Neglected reptile lost 60 per cent of weight
A FATHER-of-one and his ex-girlfriend neglected their pet iguana Iggy until he dropped to a third of his normal weight, Daventry magistrates heard.
Jobless Kenneth Bostock, aged 28, of Jubilee Road, Daventry, and Emma Rigby, aged 18, of Lower Shuckburgh, Warwickshire, appeared in court yesterday accused of causing unnecessary suffering to the 2ft long male iguana by failing to provide it with proper and necessary care and attention.
Both defendants pleaded guilty to the offences, which took place between February 20 and April 3, this year when they were living together at Chantelle Court, Daventry.
Russell Eaton, prosecuting on behalf of the RSPCA, said underfed Iggy had become emaciated and weighed 0.95 kg after he was taken into the charity�s care following a visit by one of its inspectors.
Mr Eaton said a few days later Iggy had managed to build his weight to 1.1 kg and eventually to 3.5 kg, the recommended figure, following treatment at a specialist veterinary surgery.
The court was told that Bostock had bought the creature from a pet shop in Daventry about a year ago.
Mr Eaton said: �There are no previous matters against Rigby but there are matters against Bostock. He received a caution for causing unnecessary suffering to a dog.�
Rigby, representing herself, told the court that she had seen the reptile on three occasions while they were living together.
Bostock, also representing himself, declined to make any comment.
Magistrates ordered Rigby to pay �125 costs, �218 for Iggy�s maintenance costs and a fine of �125, making a total of �468.
She was also banned from keeping a reptile for two years.
Chairman Michael Summers said: �We see your role as somewhat secondary in this matter but you were there (at the former address) and it happened over quite a long period.�
Magistrates adjourned sentencing on Bostock to September 26 to allow the preparations of pre-sentence reports.
He was released on unconditional bail.
