Active UV questions..

i know this topic has come up multiple times, but i still have some questions. it seems that the only negative thing i've heard about these is the possibility (or fact?) that they put out too much UV. if this is the case, would it be possible to have it only cut on maybe a few hours a day? any thoughts?
