After debating, worrying, researching and a lot of praying, I did it. I took Daisy to Dr. Larry White (a great guy).
To make a long story short...each "pregnancy" (she has never been with a male) it was harder and long and drawn out for her to get all the eggs out, which always numbered in the 50's count. This time she ended up being "past due" and never had any digging urges. I had made up my mind that the next time she was gravid, I would get her spayed.
Her surgery started approx. noon today, and I took her home by about 4:30. It went well. We were shocked to discover that all 50+ eggs were still in the ovaries and not in the oviducts yet! We are not sure why, or even if they would have eventually ended up there, but I had that "gut feeling" that she would have had complications this time around. She is resting comfortably on pillows and looks a little bummed out, but that is to be expected for a couple of days. She got a shot for pain and an injection of Baytril before we left the vet's office today. I have to give her a Baytril injection every other day for the next four days, as a precaution for infection. Her incision is approx 2 1/2" long and looks good.
Will keep anyone who is interested posted as the days go by. Unfortunately, with owning a female iguana, this is always something one should keep in the back of their mind. Daisy is 9 years old and we want her to live a long and healthy life, and it's GREAT to know...NO MORE EGG WORRIES!!!! To me, the cost was worth it. I cannot put a price on my love for her. She has truly been a sweet, affectionate pet over the last few years, and want to have her for many more to come. I highly recommend Dr. White.
