Today was the hearing on Amazon's case. Management from the shop never showed up, which really ticked the judge. This was the second judge on the case. The first judge bought a teddy bear hamster for his daughter there. It became clear within a few days that it was sick, so she brought it back and was given another, which proved to be even sicker. So she got herself off the case to avoid bias. However, I believe her experiences were noted for the record in Amazon's case.
Animal Control entered their evidence of 61 animals with substandard caging, 3 dead animals, and general uncleanliness fostering disease. My vet then presented Amazon's exam for the record, discussing possible long-term damage to the spinal column from ridiculously small housing.
The judge found 64 violations against the store, fined them $1,000 per violation (maximum allowed under our local laws) and wrote an order that the store not be allowed to sell reptiles, birds or small mammals for 90 days while improving their caging. Once permitted to sell these animals again, they must submit to inspection by Animal Control before sales resume. So basically they can only sell fish and feeder animals.
The 61 animals involved will be put up for adoption, if not adopted in 90 days they unfortunately go back to the store.
