I've placed rescued animals at this school on and off since 1984 when I was in college and first learned about it. They have an excellent track record for caring for the animals. It's a private school for kids who want to major in computer, natural, and medical sciences in college and so their staff is highly motivated and enthusiastic about the animals. There are both summer and winter semesters there for kids who want to take extra credits so staff is there year-round.
They get their supplies at a steep educational discount through laboratory supply companies. Further, the programs for soup labels, cereal boxtops, grocery store register receipts and used printer cartridges help to buy both computers and science lab supplies.
There are caretakers on staff for the science wing animals and the kids are also trained carefully in animal husbandry. The lovebirds and budgies that have gone there are "adopted" by students for socialization and training. Unfortanately, I don't really see this current flock of budgies as trainable. They are mostly sexually-mature sub- or adults who are probably too well flock bonded to learn "people skills" like speaking or playing hockey with bottle caps. The kids will really be challenged by the 34 (yes!! 34 in one cage) budgies I sent there.
Thankfully, no iguanas went there. The store had not replaced Amazon, in fact, they put 3 little fish in the cage to try and pretend there was no place for an iguana when Animal Control came back for a full survey of all animals.
Two of my local news stations did stories on the pet store but unfortunately both put more of an "isn't this a wonderful school" spin on it. Not surprising. It's so much easier to take on an independent pet store than one of the big chains. Everyone is afraid of the lawyer power of the huge companies.
Oh, well, I am not going to let that spin control get me down. Amazon is sitting on my shoulder trying his/her best to warm a cool belly with my body head and rubbing a shedding head against my neck. Too cute! I can only hold this wiggly iglet mornings and after lights out at night, but we're definitely making progess on getting to know each other. I love my little green one more every day.
