I'd like to take my iguana out with me more...

My iguana is about four years old, male, and not the most sociable animal I've ever met. He's not bad though either. He likes being outdoors, but I haven't yet found a way to get and keep him in a leash without him throwing a tantrum.
What can I do to get him accustomed to car rides? Or taking him out in public like a small town carnival type event? I mean, he always wants to jump off of me, and I'm afraid of him getting scared by loud noise. Is he just too mature to start learning and getting used to these things?
