I'm not sure if he is too old to socialize w/ strangers but as far as car rides go I don't see why he can't. Have you tried letting him free roam in the car (providing there is not a way for him to get out or get hurt on) while you drive or even just sit at your home so he can get used to the car. I would think given enough time w/ him exploring the car and finding there's nothing in there to hurt him he will relax. I don't see how it is much different than having an ig free roam in your home...at first they are scared but after exploring they are more comfortable. I got mine used to the car by letting him loose in it with all the windows up. He for the most part stayed on the head rest of my seat but the first few times he jumped to the back seat and climbed around then would jump to my door and look out the window, etc. He now pretty much just lays on my lap in the car. Sometimes he will jump onto the dash but I always get him down since he can't hang on well up there.

I also take mine for walks around the neighborhood w/ him on my shoulder, I take him to visit at other peoples houses, we've taken him to a park once (it was very crowded but he was much more relaxed than I had thought he'd be) w/ many people coming up to look at him, I took him to my daughters school for show and tell day. I try to introduce him to as many different situations as possible, I very seldom let anyone touch him (not many people want to) but I want him to feel comfortable and safe in other places besides his cage. I think he must feel safe w/ me or he wouldn't have ran up my leg and got on my back when he was scared. I also tend to think if he didn't feel safe in other places w/ me he wouldn't relax...many times he's laying on my shoulder w/ his back legs relaxed and hanging off the sides looking around curiously at every thing. I feel if he was stressed he wouldn't lay in that position...JMO.
