I don't own an iggy, but a water dragon...( hello Spyro and Sparks, Muffin says Hi! ), much like Spyro and Sparks Mom, I come here to read up and get info, and plus I just love your forum. Anyway, Muffin is allowed to free roam for several hours a day, and I know that ALOT of other peoples animals are as well. Muffin would NOT be happy if left sitting in her enclousure all day, even if it's roomy enough for her. So is the risk for samonella higher for those of us that let our animals free roam? Should I get some Lysol and disinfect several times a week ( I'm not being sarcastic, just an honest question ). Are the risks the same as handling raw chicken or eggs, or are they higher with reptiles? I'm kinda curious, the media seems to have a hayday with this one, and I'm usually pretty skeptical when reading their reports. All anmials carry different sorts of bactiera or parasites that can infect humans. Dogs get worms, cats can carry toxoplasmosis ( dangerous for pregnant women, children, etc. ), horses can have scabies, contact with sheep feces can have ecoli, etc. I think ( and it's been pretty much said here ), that with proper hygene there won't be a problem in your home. I wash my hands after each handling and cage cleaning, disinfect the tub with lysol and bleach after bath time, etc. How long can samonella survive in carpet and cloth? Does it need a particular environment to survive long?
