Humans have a higher risk of contacting salmonellosis from undercooked poultry/eggs but since keeping reptiles is becoming so popular yer seeing alot more concern with salmonella & reptile keeping. The 4 inch turtle law went into effect in the early 70's because of transmission of salmonella to small childern. Free roamers shed off salmonella; dragging their feces contaminated tails, feet, and even shed skin has been found to contain salmonella. Why ventral tail venipuncture is most often recommended (clipping toenail for blood sample for example can ^ uric acid levels and show + for salmonella because of contamination on toenail with urates & feces) Here's what Maders says about salmonella virulence: 89 days in tap water, 115 days in pond water, 280 days in garden soil, 28 months in bird feces, 30 months in bovine manure. There are 31 serotypes of salmonella identified in reptiles with approx. 12 of these identified in infected humans who keep reptiles.
I wouldn't use Lysol around my reptiles (fumes are toxic)..Cleaners to eliminate salmonella with no rinsing are vinegar followed by hydrogen peroxide application (used alone they do not kill salmonella) or Nolvasan,
10% bleach/ water solution most often used but needs a rinse over.
