new igg tail problem

Hi everybody. I adopted a knew igg. I think it is a he. About three feet long with a lot of attitude. I had a female that died, but she was very laid back.Anyway he seems to be very healthy with a big appetite. What I am worrying about is his tail. The last 5-6 inches is dead looking. I think it got caught in a door. It is very hard,dry,and black looking. Is this something that should be apputated? Or should I not worry about it.
