There should be nothing wrong with building a large enclosure now for your ig. In fact, it's probably the most cost effective way to do it provided that you have the room and cash to do it now....
Approximate dimensions should be 6x6x3 minimum although bigger is always better. Choose your wood wisely because, although it will be sealed (correct?), there are certain woods that can be toxic to iguanas. If you are going with hardware cloth instead of glass or plexi, make sure that it is a smooth, smallholed mesh - preferrably plastic coated. Be aware that it will be more difficult to keep humidity levels up with a mesh enclosure.
I know people out here will be getting sick of hearing me recommend them but as far as heating the enclosure, we prefer to use radiant heat panels as a constant heat source. In and of themselves they give off no light which means that sleep won't be disturbed. Add to that the fact that they are the safest means of heating an enclosure that we've found so far. Any heat source that you use should be located more towards the upper third of the encolsure in order to help create the correct heat gradient. Since igs are cold-blooded they regulate their body temps by physically moving to warmer or cooler locations depending on the amount of heat they require at any given point in the day.
Feel free to drop us a line if you have any further questions if you like. We'll be more than happy to help in any way we can. The more opinions you can get the more informed decisions you can make.
Good luck !
