In Reply to: mouthrot in petstore? (please help asap) posted by Crystal W on March 03, 2001 at 11:46:47:
It sounds like mouthrot.
the iglet must have rubbed its snout raw in the enclosure, and the jerks working there never cared. Doing so, it got infected, and the infection "ate" its flesh away. The black thing might be a necrosis. This guy sounds hopelss to save.
It may also be a cricket or other bug put in the enclosure as food, that bit or chewed its snout. Floks do that sometimes, and at night, if the insect hasn't been eaten, it feasts on its predators. But it's more likely a case of mouthrot.
What u can do are the following things:
being small, you could buy it, and try to rehabilitize it. We'll help you out in what to do if u plan to do so.
Being so neglected, he probably has a mutlitude of endoparasites and malnutrition, so he is most likely to die, even if u give him good care. If u purchase him, u may have him euthenized. It's sad, but it will end its suffering.
Ask folks here on this forum if they live in your area, if they do, they might be willing to help! But even with all the care and medication, he sounds like he's gone over the edge... :(
Find out more, and keep us posted! He probably cannot feed properly with its mouth rotten... poor thing! U have no experience, but we can help u out, and at least u may give him a slight chance of survival! Good luck!
: Yesterday I went into a local petstore, and saw a horrific sight. There was a juvinile iguana (also housed with others) that was sitting on a log. He had beautiful eyes but something didnt seem right, so i went in for a closer look.... the poor thing had front teeth missing, and all the way from the nostrils down was gone! I mean, it looked like the skin had rotted away! There was also something black protruding from its mouth. I wanted to talk to a worker there, but i was upset and almost in tears. I hate seeing animals suffering, esspecially reptiles. I have been trying to figure out what was affecting this iguana, but haven't come up with too much. Could it be severe mouthrot? Please someone give me advice. I am inexperienced with iggies (I keep geckos), but I'm trying to figure this out.
: Also, is mouthrot contangious?
: I am most definately going to make some complaints, but I want to be as well informed as i can before doing so. Im afraid I wont have much time though, because this iguana did not look good! Please help!
: I also do not have internet access, since its the weekend and i cant get into my school (Im actually using a library), so I would really apprieciate if anyone out there could give me some advice.
