Damaged spikes. Will they ever look better?

Lucy has a number of spikes that have the tips either broken off or just bent. Some of her spikes are much shorter than others and they appear to be new growth. Will the damaged spikes get better or do they always stay that way once they and chipped, bent, broken, or split? Russell.
