In Reply to: Damaged spikes. Will they ever look better? posted by Russell Cindi on March 01, 2001 at 13:13:32:
Chuck had quite a few messed up spikes when I got him around Thanksgiving of last year. Since then, I have seen spikes growing straighter and taller, with better color.
All I have been doing is working on his spikes on a daily basis. Every day I spend 5 or 10 minutes with a spray bottle, wetting down his spikes and gently massaging them. I have removed several layers of old shed, straightened out bent spikes, and stimulated growth of new tissue.
Think of it like a scar. With each layer of skin shedded, a fresh new layer is revealed. if the damage is deep enough, it will take a while to get rid of all the bad skin.
Broken spikes will take the longest to grow back straight and tall... But in time, they will. The other thing you can do to make sure you dont make matters worse is to use extra caution when handling your ig. Do not grab him from above, covering his spikes with your hand. Always scoop him up from below. DO not restrict his movements when handling, but try to guide him.
here is a picture of the most beautiful spikes I have ever seen on a captive iguana. This is a Colombian Iguana at Tonya's Pet Center in Virginia. He is HUGE, and has some awesome blue coloring that just cannot be seen in the photo.

: Lucy has a number of spikes that have the tips either broken off or just bent. Some of her spikes are much shorter than others and they appear to be new growth. Will the damaged spikes get better or do they always stay that way once they and chipped, bent, broken, or split? Russell.
