Hi Mark! We don't know each other but I've been reading your recent posts to the board and wanted to reply but was not going to in fear that sharing my opinion, which differs from many others, would not be welcome. I have even refrained from posting for the last few days because I just haven't been up to dealing with all the ick. That being said, I thought about it and decided that I was going to post to you for no other reason than I had something to say.

I have no probelm with people coming and asking for help, even people who have already gone out and purchased a baby iguana (even though, like you, we take in rescues/unwanteds/abandoneds/abused AND I do discourage people from purchasing instead of adopting and I also discourage breeding for reasons I will get to later) what I do have a problem with is when these people ask for help and yet seem to have already made up their minds about what the correct answer is even before they sent the post to the board in the first place. So, we see the post, we try to help them and the only post they acknowledge as being intelligent is the one that agrees with them. I'm tired of typing take your animal to the vet, I am tired of watching those relatively new (far less than a year) to owning an iguana pass out harmful and/or incorrect adive ....ultimately these people come back to people like my husand and I when they have taken all this bad advice and now have a sick or dieing animal and beg us to take it in or make it well because for whatever reason they won't/claim they can't take it to the vet. I'm sorry Mark, that's a hard one for me to swallow. Like many others who open their home to these animals, I could have 20 or more of them here right now if I had the space and provisions.

My objections with purchase and breeding stems from a local concern. There is such an over population of iguanas on the market where we live that we have seen some stores sell them as live prey items (I'm sorry, I know -I felt the same way when I saw that). People are buying already sickly iguanas from the pet store, uneducated as to how to properly cae for them, the iguanas die or are literaly thrown away because the person doesn't want to/can't afford to pay for vet care and then they go buy another iguana. It seems to be a vicouse cycle at best. There is so much to be said for giving an unwanted animal, whether it be iguana, dog or cat, a good home. I have also seen far too many pet stores keeping iguanas in unsanitary and dreadful conditions. If they kept dogs and cats in the same manner they would be shut down but because few animal welfare people understand lizards, it goes unchecked. If I can't shut a store like that down, I would atleast like to see them not carry animals anymore, atleast not reptiles and lizards anyway.

Currently we have 5 iguanas, three of our own and 2 foster igs we are trying to find homes for -both of our foster igs are juveniles -I'm sorry but if someone is looking for an iguana, I'll do almost anything I can to get them to adopt over buying one. Even after someone has bought one, I still stress adoption in the hopes that if/when they decide they want another they will adopt vs. purchase.

Maybe if we can agree to see where each of us is coming from, we can have a better understanding of what makes each of us tick. Sadly, what I have encountered in the past few weeks on Kingsnake is that the only opinion I am entitled to have is the one that doens't disagree with anyone else's. Sorry folks but that is really how some people here have made me feel. It's the reason that I have stayed away for a few days and really didn't know if I would be coming back. I decided that it is not my fault if other people don't practice what they preach in the way they think people should treat each other and behave on the forum -I have just as much of a right to be here as anyone else -irregardless of the fact that I am not an "old timer" who gives "intelligent" responces. I am new to the forum -I am not new to having igs - the fact that I am new to the forum has no relevance to the level of my intelligence.

Once again my .02$
