So how far from the UVB light can iguanas be anyway?

I have heard 18", but the box that the bulb came in says 12", and when I look at pictures of enclosures, I'm seeing greater thatn that in a lot of cases. Is 18" okay or too far. I'm mounting a fixture tonight and want to be sure so that I don't have to redo it. Thanks, Russell (and Lucy too!)
