The closer the better . I have the light in all the rescue cages under 10 inches . Speedy has his lights beside his shelf so he can even lay on it if he wants to . You can get plactic cover for the ends to elimanate all risk of shock .

PS UVB lights do degrade over time most I have tested last more then the six months preached . However if you can not test them around 6 months would be a good replacement time .
