High everyone, please help me.
Perhaps I should introduce my self, my name is
Cosmos and I’m 16 years old and lives in Sweden, I have one Ig who’s name is
Odlan, I love him and he such a nice little fellow.
He’s almost 6 years old and about 1 m and weights about 1,5 kg. He has very
bad kidneys.
I apologize for my English and would understand if you wouldn’t understand
it, but I’m so sad for my Ig and want to help him. I know that he wont be
around forever but I love him and want to spend as much time as possible
with him so please help me if you can, because I love him so much it hurts
me to see that he isn’t very well and want him to have the best since he
have always been there for me to cherish me up when I have been sad or had a
hard time.
I hope that that someone here can help with advise or if you have been in
the same situation as I am in now. I would be very happy if any experts in
the reptile area could help me.
I want you to know that I does everything I can to keep him healthy, so I’m
open to any suggestions.
The reason I think why his kidneys gone bad is CAT FOOD, when we bought him
several years ago we were told to feed him Iceberg lettuce and green peas
and cat food. We feed him cat food for about a year, after that we made
some change in his diet.
When I went to our vet after that he had been lethargic and had a swollen
dewlap, she told us that his kidneys were real bad, the gave him several
shoots ( don’t know all of them but one was steroids, I'm trying to get the
medical report but that has been hard since my vet is at vacation ),
Since he was dehydrated we where told to give him 50 ml every day together
with 0.15 ml Baytril and 2 x 1 ml of Navaluzid. We were supposed to give him
baytril for three weeks, and so did we.
Novaluzid :
Novaluzid.
Magn. hydrox. et magn. carb. respond. 24,1 mg Mg, alumin. hydrox, respond.
58,5 mg Al. amyl, hydrolysat.
et hydrogenat. 67 m, sorbitol. 42 mg, saccharinnatr.,conservans, aroma,
constit. q.s. et aq. ad 1 ml.
10 ml binds ca 85 mmol Hci.
The medicine is given for when you have pyrosis and erucation ( sourly )
don't know the English word for that one.'
5- 10 ml when trouble or by doctors orders.
I don’t give him all the water at once and his medicine is given orally.
Since he couldn’t handle that amount of water we started to give him 30 ml
and 1 ml of Novaluzid, for about two and a half week, and now we have
started to give him more since he seems to handle that well, ( 30-45 ml
everyday). I thought he would day on the Christmas day since he had
difficulties breathing and looked very week, I think that the water he had
been given had made it’s way in to the tissues perhaps his lungs where
effected and I didn’t get rid of it since he perhaps got some water in to
his wind pipe.
Should I give him water during the night when he is asleep or is that
stressful for him since I keep the heat during the night to boost his immune
system and his digestion and don’t want him to get dry.
Since I live in Sweden I have trouble finding all the food for the MK diet
but the one’s I have found that are good for him ( at least I think ) are:
Butternut squash, parsnip, pear, cantaloupe ( the yellow melon right ? ),
green beans, collard and escarole.
I don’t give him so much escarole and green beans.
Is the collard ( this is the right collard or it doesn’t look like at the MK
page . ( http://linnaeus.nrm.se/flora/di/brassica/brass/brasole3.jpg )bad
for him since it is high in Calcium oxalate ( or isn’t it becasue there
calcium level is quite high or ? I don’t know here a link to MK’s page
http://www.sonic.net/~melissk/cal_ox.html , and since I add calcium to his
food.
I bought some fresh figs a few days ago and some dried today how should you
prepare them ?
Is his diet good, is there anything that are bad for him considering his
health, should I get some Dandelion and Custard greens ( they are really
expensive over here but that doesn’t matter ).
Should I get some alfalfa powder or tablets which I crush and mixes with his
food, or should it be avoided.
I ad some calcium supliment to his food daily, it is without phosphor and
does not contain any vitamins.
I have a vitamin supliment which contains vitamin D3 and A, I don’t want too
give him that since that wouldn’t be great, I ’ll be getting one without
Vitamin D tomorrow though.
I also give him Thyrodine one drop a day in his water, Thyrodine contains .
Potassium Iodine. I have read about it but didn’t understand it.
I blend his food, and the use a mixer, does the nutrian disappear if you
boil the vegetables.
Ï add extra water to his food.
Is there anyone who knows if there is a substitute for ensure, here in
Sweden or if there are any known similar products.
His enclosure:
I keeps his basking spot at 35 – 38 * C and his night temperature at 30-35
*C, the humidity level is 75 – 90 %, I mist him every time I mist his
enclosure which is about 15 – 30 times a day.
I give him daily baths, 2- 3 times everyday and some days four times, mostly
during the weekends.
His behavior:
He is very nice and don’t show any signs of aggression or irritation except
that he don’t like when we give him his water and medicine, which I either
wouldn’t like.
His poo is different almost every three days, When we started he had
diarrhea for about two weeks then he had good looking except that the very
orange tinged ( the stuff that’s usually brown ) and then it became darker
and had the right shape and about a week ago it became orange and to day and
last day he had diarrhea and the color is better ( could it be that we have
been giving him more water ?? ).
The white part looks ok, it doesn’t look thick, it more looks like spider
web, it has a little orange / yellow in it though.
He eats okay everyday and so but someday he wont eat if the food hasn’t the
right color, like today he didn’t eat because there was a lot of butter nut
in it which he usually likes, so I started to give him some pear and then I
made new food for him with less butternut in which he ate, someday he eats
less and someday more.
His body looks al right he isn’t very skinny, perhaps because he gets so
much water, but I don’ think so. His dewlap is quite large but not very
filled.
I think he have some swelling is neck but I’m not sure.
Sometimes he keeps his mouth open but recently only after he have been given
water, perhaps he got some down his lungs, for about four days ago he kept
his mouth open quite often but when I changed the way of giving him water he
stopped, the vet assistant told me that is was okay to give him water and
medicine in the beginning of his mouth and perhaps if he got to much some
made it down his windpipe.
But he haven’t had his mouth open as often the last days, only saw it open
to day but that was after feeding and when I came home and found him in his
basking spot which was too hot for him ( bought a lower effect on his
basking light, but that didn’t seem to do any different ), so I will go back
to the old CHE.
He sometimes has more saliva then usually.
His skin doesn’t seem dry, but some days his skin especially around his
belly looks kind of wrinkled, but gets is old for bask after a while or
next day.
I have noticed almost two weeks ago that one of his eyes when he wasn’t
asleep just had his eyes closed ( the left one ) was larger then the other
one and puffed up, his eyes where closed.
Sometimes I can feel his left kidney I belive, I’m not really sure but I
think it is his kidey.
I now that this is a very long letter and I would be very thankful if you
could read it and help me, if you could give me some advice on the food and
other things that I have mentioned or if there is any special food he should
be fed due to his condition and if there is any medication I should give
him, if there is any thing I should watch out for in food and vitamins or
if there is any other things that I haven’t mentioned or do wrong.
I hope that it’s okay that I ask for help if there is any thing that I see
or is wondering about.
Thank you for your answer and I just want to say that all of you who takes
care of bad treated and sick Ig’s are doing a wonderful thing and that I
think Melissa Kaplans book Iguana For Dummies is have to have for all Iguana
Owners.
