Regenerated tail

Almost a year ago we had to have part of Lightning's tail removed due to dry gangrene. It has grown back completely. I remember at the time the vet told us that it would grow back with only black coloration and without bone.

L's tail regrowth is a dark almost black color, however, I actually DO see the stripes on it, too. They are a different shade and definitely there...had hubby back up my looksee.

Here's my question (finally!): Is this a *fluke* that she has her stripes back? Or is it actually more prevalent than vets let on in case they do grow back all black? Just curious about it.
