new iguana is nasty

i recently purchased a two foot iguana from a petstore. in all my experiance with iguanas, (having my own and working in a petstore), I have never seen such hostility. he whips and hisses at me for starters. i figured with the proper amount of handling, he would relex a little. but it's gotten to a point where he won't eat if i'm in the same room as him, or sleep if i make any movement. any advice would be appreciated.
