Okay, I have kinda a delima here ... don't wanna post my name in the event that the owners of the animals ever stops in here -regulars probably know who I am though :)
Yesterday a juvie ig and a water dragon were dropped off to stay for a week. Knowing NOTHING about water dragons I have to say that he looks like he is on death's door. The owner made several comments that they think the ig is too small, I nodded politely as I always do but the truth is, it is too small.
I went to Trisha's water dragon page to do some quick research-if anyone knows of a better site please advise BTW. Turns out, the owner is not feeding or keeping the animal properly. They are only feeding a juvie every other day and only 1-2 crickets and nothing else. Apparently they are not gut loading the crickets for any length of time. They did bring over cricket water and some commercial gut load though. The WD ate 3 crickets today -the crickets for the past 24 hours had been kept on a bed of rolled oats mixed with the calcium gut load, were given a potatoe, carrot and some ig salad to eat. The thing is, this lil guy looks like he is on death's door -I'm thinking of taking him to our vet on Monday to ask for help.
The ig -I can't even begin to understand how he can be so small -he chowed almost 2 plates of veggies and greens today. I think they are under feeding him as well.
How do I tactfully approach this with the owners when they return? I have permission to take the animals to the vet if I feel they need to be seen so I am not worried about that at all. However, according to the WD info on Trisha's page the owners are drasticly underfeeding it and the enclosure is all wrong. I hate to make all the changes and send these animals back to how they had been kept -it breaks my heart!! Do I print out care manuals? I just don't know the best way to handle this situation .... any opinions/advice is welcome!!
