you want to avoid them getting defensive...so whatever sneaky approach you can think of taking would be the best.
And even if they gave you permission to take them to the vet, I'm sure they probably will gasp at the bills-- so you need to make it sound pretty critical why you took them in. (they were lethargic and thin, not eating, looking like they were ready to die and you didn't want to be responsible etc.) Then perhaps you can use the vet to your advantage by saying he told you to do this and that or they were not going to make it (say whatever changes you see as neccessary)-- and give them the caresheets...you were so nervous that you went online to look up caresheets since you wanted to find out more and get them on the right track. Use your imagination. Good luck!
