Intestinal problem

I have a strange one for you guys to try to figure out! My friends ig went to the bathroom and her intestines started coming out her vent. My friend already took her to the vet and had surgery done to fix it. My question is what would cause this to happen. My friend got her ig as an adult and does not know what kind of care she had before she got her. I'm wondering if unproper care could have cause this to happen and if so what kind of care needs to be given to help her ig on a speedy recovery. Any thought would be helpful. Thanks ^^Sam^^
