How can I tame my WC garter?!?!?!

I have a WC flame garter. I have had him for about 2 years now. Whenever I pick him up, he either swings around in circles in midair, bites me, craps on me, or does all 3 (that is really fun, NOT). What can I do to help calm him down? I used to hold him a lot, but it didn't seem to do much good. Just when I trusted him again he bit me for no reason. All help is appreciated. THanx.
