Usually with very nippy garters of any type a great way to tame them is with rubber gloves. Wear relatively thin rubber gloves that lets you feel sensitivity so you know you aren't holding the snake too tight. They HATE the taste of rubber gloves and this usually discourages them form biting after about 3 months. Hope I have helped!
