I don't want to be an oger on this forum, however, I get concerned when I hear of young people owning cobras, mambas, etc. For the most part, these people are grossly underqualified to take on the responsibility of owning a deadly snake (nor being prepared for a bite). As a parent, you owe it to yourself and your child to not allow him to keep this type of snake in the house (even if you live in a state that allows the keeping of venomous snakes as an individual)....if he insists on ownng one, wait until he is old enough to get his own place so no one else is put in danger....common sense must prevail as a parent. As a director of a nature center that features Illinois native herps including venomous species, I can't imagine too many people (even those with lots of herp experience) to be able to take on the responsibility of owning a venomous snake...that is best left in the hands of very experienced people, zoos, nature centers, etc. who have the facilities to properly maintain these animals while ensuring the safety of the public. There is too great a risk involved with so many other beautiful and harmless serpents available in the pet trade.

: Anyone here know anything about this? I got chills when I heard it from my teenager's friend's mother. I need to try to find out if it's true or not (possible to "get high" on it?). Any advice here would be appreciated. If so, what kinds of snakes, etc? (My 18 yr old son wants a cobra & his friend has a cobra and mamba [I think]).
