PIJAC Warns of Rhode Island Proposal


Legislation that would grant animal shelters and humane societies the power to confiscate animals from pet stores has been introduced in Rhode Island, according to Marshall Meyers and Michael Maddox of the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council.

The proposal would allow these organizations to investigate stores for alleged cases of animal neglect or improper care. The organizations could then seize animals if they found evidence of neglect.

This arrangement is particularly troubling as that these organizations compete against pet stores because they adopt out animals for a fee and often sell pet products to raise funds, Maddox said
