: Thanks for the good wishes. Yes, he actually sings (vocalizes would be more proper, I suppose.) It's part of a mating/courtship behavior and he most commonly does it when soaking in a warm bath. I can't say that it's joy related, but it certainly seems to indicate a certain level of contentment, as with most natural behaviors that, if stressed, they don't do. It's a most un-tortoiselike sound and it's the one of the ways I was able to identify him when I first got him. No one, pet stores, books, etc. seemed to know what he was. Because he so closely resembles the testudo graeca spp. most tried to tell me that he was a juvenile of one of those. I wasn't sure what he was, but I knew he was full-grown, and thus far too small to be that. There is a wave file of the kleinmanni call online. I don't have the address here, but search for "tortoise calls" and the like and I'm sure you'll find it. It may be on Tortoise Trust or similar site. As soon as I heard it I knew. Once I followed up that lead and with my vet, I was able to confirm.
