A common name is only a common name if it is common usage. The user of such. A contrived, made up name is by definition not a common name.

At the moment, there are a number of "standard" lists of common names around, with the unfortunate side-effect that many propose different standard names for the same animals. Perhaps what we need is an International Commission on Standard Zoological Nomenclature.

On the other hand, perhaps not.
