Feeding wild caught adult subocs

I recently collected a pair of large adult Trans-Pecos rat snakes, and I have read that they are difficult to get started on lab rats or mice. I can get gerbils, but this would be a pricey option. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as the larger of the two is a 5&1/2 footer and a magnificient specimen.
