: Has anyone observed triaspis to be active yet this year. It has been a really dry winter so I would bet their activity will be limited to summer rains.
Hi Eric. I just got back from AZ on Monday. I spent a week in s. Arizona. I made it up into the Santa Rita Mtns. several times, and here's what I observed. I looked at green rat habitat on the north side near the mouth of Madera Canyon. I found a Sonora striped whipsnake active, but little of anything else, except fence lizards. The vegetation seems to be healthy, but it was fairly dry for this time of year, and cool. I met a CO who said all the reptiles went back into hibernation because it got cold. He had seen rattlers earlier. None of the washes had any water. Later in the week I went over to the south side of the mtns. One main arroyo had a little water in it. It was cold...just high 60's and low 70's in the high desert. I spent two days there and found nothing. We did get two showers last week. After the first I went road hunting on White House Rd after dark and found my first snake of the year, a desert king. Also there were numerous red-spotted toads. I believe it's too dry and cold right now for the green rats. Maybe better luck later in April.
Question. Do you know more about triaspis habits? Why would they remain inactive until late summer? TC.
