Well, I haven't ever observed a green rat in the wild, but I know someone who caught one a couple of years ago. He went during the summer monsoon. He found it on the road at night. I saw it live..a gorgeous animal. I wouldn't keep a wild one myself, because of various reasons, but am interested in their ecology and behaviors. I've ordered a captive-produced pair. I would like to work with them in the wild, but have only been able to visit AZ on spring break (so far)..this last one being my fourth time. I was hoping to determine the time of year they emerge this season. But I guess it varies with the type of winter. There seems to be varying opinions on how to hibernate them in captivity. I think we can safely say they have a fairly lengthy hibernation, since they don't seem to come out before April anyway. Their habitat seems to be pretty sparce, except there seems to be quite a few stubby oak trees in the area.
Questions. Do they climb oak trees as part of their regular activity, and do they spend time in the various shrubs in their habitat? And if they are climbers, do they raid bird nests? Also, how do they survive if there is no water in their active range for months at a time? Thanks, TC.
