Hi Eric.
I can only talk a few minutes 'cus I have to go to work. I'm a teacher, and it's why I go to school. I go to AZ on Spring Break because we have relatives in s. AZ. They live near the Santa Ritas. I live in MI.
As a naturalist, and interested mostly in Elaphe, I started visiting the Santa Ritas several yrs. ago. The desert is very new to me. It and the mtns. got my interest right away. So, here I am. Still studying things like the life zones of the Santa Ritas. I do some serious bird watching too, and am a member of Friends of Madera Canyon.
I said the habitat was sparce, and meant that there was a lot of cactus and open ground, compared to what I'm used to. I didn't mean the area was small. I'm talking about the whole life zone around the Santa Ritas which might be called the Oak Woodlands. It is from around 4000 ft. at Proctor Rd., near the mouth of Madera Canyon, to about 6000 ft. at the highest elevation I explored in the foothills. My friend caught his green rat off of Proctor Rd. near Elephant Head, and I din't mean to infer that they are nocturnal. I think it might have been right about when it got dark.
As far as the animals I ordered being habitat specific, I only know the original animals were from AZ. They could have been from other Sky Islands. There are several people I know of that are trying to breed them now. I think they have had them long term, maybe about five years or more now. I'm mostly interested in the habitat and would like to explore this more, but don't know when I'll be able to get back again.
Questions. Do they have a specific range, such as the oak woodlands, or a certain elevation in the Santa Ritas? Have you explored these mtns., yet, Eric? I know they're associated with water, which means creek, washes, or arroyos. Even Madera Creek doesn't have permanent water though. They must be able to go w/o water for an extensive time. I think this is a critical part of their ecology. I can't believe more people don't know about this. Feel free to email me this weekend. I'll be home for a couple days. TC.
