question on handling

OK.. we recently saved a small juvi black rat snake and we haven't tried to pick it up or handle it in anyway for a few days.. we let it get used to its new environment..etc.. i did feed it on friday a thawed frozen pinkie which it ate with no problems.. could you guys give me some suggestions on how to handle this snake.. I know its only trying to protect itself when i move the water dish or anything it curls up and fake strikes at me.. wags its tail very rapidly..etc.. what is the normal breakin handling that you would suggest.. I dont want to hurt him so any information will be greatly appreciated.. I posted a picture of him below.
