2 days after feeding is generally fine for handling. Dean's right-to get them used to handling, you have to handle them.
For a cheap (but unattractive) hide, simply take any small cardboard box that is clean and cut it to size. (kleenex, mac & cheese, etc.)
These can be discarded if soiled, and are generally safe for use.
