Question on black rat snake color

Hey all
got a question someone may be able to answer. I have a W/C black rat snake I have had for 8 months now. He was maybe a month old when I caught him. He shed two days after I had him (maybe his first shed?). Any ways his color has changed somewhat since last year. His last 1/3rd of his body has gotten darker, while the first 2/3ds has turned more of a golden brown color. I have also noticed that on his sides he has traces of brick red in some of his scales. Just would like to know if anyone else has seen this in black rats? He was caught in central Kentucky. I will get some pictures of this as soon as I get my digital camera back and get them posted. Just thought it was pretty neat and would like to know if this is common? Thanks to all who respond!
