In Reply to: Interesting eating habits from my silly bairdi... posted by Shaky on April 16, 2002 at 22:05:08:

One of my female bairdi will eat anything live, but is sporatic with f/t mice. I am trying to get her committed to f/t all the time, but need to drop her live every once in awhile to keep her growth rate in line with the other female. The male and other female eat f/t anytime. If you plan on breeding your bairdi in the future, the growth of the female is very important in my opinion. That's why I will work a little harder and be more flexible with my female bairdi. The males generally get what I drop in. If they refuse it, they miss that scheduled meal. They get another meal on their next schedule. If they eat some of the time, I don't worry. Males are touchy eaters this time of year anyway. Some snakes just have tricky feeding responses. My Cape Gophers have real touchy eating reponses. My partner, Del Alspaw, gave me a suggestion that has worked in this particular case. I drop in a live pinkie, they can't generally harm your snake. If the cape goes for it, then this seems to have triggered their eating mode. I can throw in a f/t mouse and they will generally eat it after the pinkie. I can't say this will work for every snake, but it works in this particular case. BTW - I love seeing the pics of your bairdi you post. Yours are a year ahead of mine and it's great to see how mine should look in a year. Good luck Shaky
