Sand bad for savs?

I decided to use about 2" of sand as substrate for my monitor enclosure. I told my brother after I had cleaned the tank out and had everything else in there and he said that his monitor ends up eating quite a bit of sand when he's fed and when he flicks his tounge. His monitor sort of "coughs" when this happens. Aren't Savana Monitors a desert lizard? If so, why would sand be bad for them? I know that pet stores sell sand that's calcium fortified or whatever and I thought that maybe that was for some other kind of lizard. Can anyone help me out a little on this? Oh, and I should have pics up in a couple of weeks.
