I use the calcium fortified sand in small cages, but in the bigger one thats coming I'm putting some dirt un there. No matter what substraight you put in there they are going to eat a little when you feed them. The only reason I will use dirt in the bigger cage is because I would have to spend over $200 to fill it with the calcium fortified stuff. The special sand isn't as big as the play sand(which has huge grains that I won't put in my cage). Hope this helps!!
