In Reply to: What are your feelings on kinked Eastern Indigos? posted by Josh S on December 15, 2001 at 13:31:26:

: I recently picked up a couple of easterns two of them came in with kinks. I have read that this is primarily an incubation issue, but am worried it is genetic. One of the animals has a rib that juts out slightly 1/3 of the way down his body as well as a kink towards the tail near the vent area. The other one has a kink after the vent. Do you think it is a gentic problem or incubation temp? I was hoping to grow these guys up and breed them.

: Any comments or advice would be appreciated.

Josh,

Please dont take this as an attack on the snakes that you purchased or traded for:

Kinking in Eastern Indigos occurs for a variety of reasons:
a) Excessivley high incubation temps
b) Genetic predisposition.
c) Mishandleing of eggs dureing incubation

Personally,if I produce any Eastern Indigos with kinked spines, I give them away to parties that I KNOW have no intention of ever breeding them, EVER. If I judge the kink as to severe, I put the snake in the freezer.
I never sell kinked snakes, not for pets, not for breeding stock.
If the kink is above the vent, it may affect the snake potential to reproduce, if the ribs are disteneded to much, it may affect the snakes health. As I said before..I either give ones that are kinked away to parties that I know will take good car of them and NEVER breed them, or I put them in the freezer(More likely, in all honesty)
Is it a genetically transferable trait?
I dont know, and nor am I willing to even
raise them up to find out. I DO KNOW that
high incubations temps/flutctuateing incubation
temps cause kinking also.
Josh...you said that you recently picked up a pair of Easterns, that they came in with kinks.
does this mean that the seller sent them to you without telling you they had kinks?
If so, DEMAND a refund. PERIOD.
OR..
If you went down, knowingly and picked them up, bought them, knowing they had kinks, then there is no fault with the seller. I will say this to you:
With all the people working with Drymarchon out there, you would be much wiser investing your money, time, and efort into getting a pair of healthy, non- kinked babies from a known breeder, rather than trying to raise snakes up with obvious defects. I know people may come on here and tell about their raising and breeding kinked Indigos, but whether I sell you a snake or not, I would discourage it. If you could ,I would return them, if not sell them to two other parties and use the money to buy ones that are not as defective as the ones you bought. Life is short...dont settle.

Fred
