I'll heed that advice (pretty consistent w/other's). Unfortunately, there is one egg that is retained. She looks exhausted so I am going to leave her overnight and see if there is any change by morning. Have you ever experienced this w/your indigos? In all of my years breeding snakes, this is a first for me...figures, it happens to my favorite snake! Any advice/tips would be greatly appreciated. If there is no progress by tomorrow, she'll be heading to the vet first thing Monday morning....hope she can make it. Thanks for your help.
: : My three year old indigo just laid seven eggs. What have you all found to be a typical clutch size? Also, is 78 deg. an ideal incubating temp.? I breed colubrids/pythons/boas, however, this is my first try at indigos; any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
: Rob,
: Clutch sizes can range from as little as 5 to as many as 14. Some Easterns produce very large eggs and because of that produce low numbers. Others produce large numbers of eggs, and the eggs themselves are relatively small for an indigo.
: I incubate mine at 80 degrees, with good air flow.
: I have known breeders that incubated them at 82-84 degrees with no bad results, but last year mine were inadvertetnly subject to temps of 85 degrees and I expereinced my first ever dead-in-egg neonates. So I would opt for the lowerr temps and make sure that no temp spike causes it to rise up to a higher level, even for short duration. CONGRATULATIONS!! Your work has just begun!!
: Fred
