They're called fire bellied toads because they have a rough,warty skin.
There is no official - or scientific - difference between frogs and toads. The words "frog" and "toad" originated in England centuries ago as a means of people distinguishing between tailess amphibians which had smooth skin and jumped and those that had relatively dry, warty skin and walked. Some "toads" belong the same family as frogs; for example, the Surinam Toad (Pipa pipa) belongs to the frog family Pipidae which includes the African clawed frogs (Xenopus) and the dwarf clawed frogs (Hymenochirus). African clawed frogs can be found in literature described as African clawed "toads". There are also other examples within other frog families.
