I was wondering if this ever happened to anybody else out there. I bred my Striped/Motley pair together, and I got one hatchling with a normal both dorsal and ventral pattern. I don’t know if I have a new gene, or if this result is a combination of a couple of genes, or what.
I was totally freaked out when he hatched. I thought that it must have been a one in a million fluke. When I took pictures of the entire clutch, I didn’t even include him, because I didn’t want to have to try to explain something that I didn’t understand. According to everything I understand about basic genetics, this shouldn’t, or couldn’t have happened. I bred the pair again (both times this year), and in the second clutch there was a normal patterned Anery, but on him the ventral pattern was slightly reduced.
My first thought was that I had a new striped gene that was dominant when paired with a normal gene. But I disproved that theory when I bred the male with a normal patterned female, and all of the babies had a normal pattern.
There is also an interesting distinct difference in the width of the stripe in some of the hatchlings. The wider stripes are in the minority. Some of the thin striped ones are only a couple of scales wide. Also the first clutch was all striped except for the normal patterned one, but the second clutch had about half of the clutch that was as much Motley as Striped.
Another problem I have is that I don’t think I would feel comfortable calling the normal patterned ones het for Striped or Motley.
I would appreciate some feedback as to what you might think I have here, or help my tiny brain comprehend what is going on here. I will try to post some pics of the parents, and the first clutch, but I don’t have any pics of the second clutch, or the normal from the first clutch.
