Hi Jim, I have heard that the motley and stripe genes are not the same, but are closely related. This may explain how you could hatch out a normal pattern from this pairing, if one of the parents was motley striped, and the other was striped than possibly the difference in the genes could have contributed to the normal pattern, and then the normal would be het. for both stripe and motley.
Just a guess, but made sense to me. In any case, they turned out to be some very nice babies.
